For over 40 years, WAYJO has been at the forefront of youth jazz orchestras in Australia. The fierce competition for a spot in one of their three big bands each year showcases the nation’s finest young talent, with many artists going on to achieve national and international success.
Since 1983, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra [WAYJO] has been providing unparalleled opportunities for musicians aged 14-25 years through a variety of unique programs. WAYJO comprises three big band ensembles that rehearse weekly and perform a diverse range of jazz styles at some of Perth’s premier venues.
Their 54 band members work with top band leaders, local and touring guest artists, and participate in regional, national, and international tours and exchange programs. Additionally, small ensembles from WAYJO provide entertainment for corporate and private events. WAYJO also annually commissions original big band works through our one-of-a-kind Composer in Residence Program, trains future band leaders via the Assistant Musical Director Mentorships, and runs educational Pathways programs.
