Faces of Coogee presented by Frasers Property Group

Collaborative community murals have the power to transform neighbourhoods, create a sense of belonging, and inspire positive change. They are a wonderful way to bring people together, celebrate diversity, and beautify public spaces while conveying meaningful messages through art. Festival goers will be encouraged to approach the canvas and draw their own faces on to a designated coloured circle. By the end of the festival this 20m canvas will be a spectacular display of the diversity, creativity and community that exists within the City of Cockburn. We hope to flank the canvas either side with historical images of Cockburn Community Members, to represent both past & present place makers.

Need some help? Get down between 10.30am to 2.30pm on Saturday 9 March to meet the award-winning author and illustrator Kelly Canby, on hand to help you draw your own face!

About Kelly Canby

Kelly Canby is an award-winning, internationally published, illustrator and author of over two dozen books for children. Kelly was born in London, England, but has lived in Australia since the age of three, which is probably around the same age she started playing with pencils and crayons, and it was probably only a few years after that that she decided playing with pencils and crayons was something she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

Kelly’s second picture book The Hole Story won the prestigious 2018 Western Australian Premier’s Book Award for Writing for Children, while Littlelight was shortlisted for the same award in 2019. Rodney, The Hole Story and Littlelight have all been Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Notable books for Picture Book of the Year. Kelly is also well known for her illustration work on writer Jaclyn Moriarty’s Kingdoms and Empires series of books. Together they have made four books which have either won or been shortlisted for several awards.

Kelly will be facilitating four, 45 minute sessions between 10:30am and 2:30pm on Saturday 9th March. Using her identifiable style, she’ll support members of the public to bring their own personality and creative abilities to life via the collaborative mural.
